36 SHS musicians head to state

Springtown High School Band Director Chris McLellan took 91 students to the Region 30 Solo and Ensemble contest at Aledo High School Feb. 24 and 36 advanced from there to the state contest in May.
A total of 76 students earned a Division I rating on their performances.
A Division I rating on a Class 1 piece that was played from memory is required to advance to state.

Seventeen students comprising four ensembles also advanced to state. The state-bound ensembles are:

Flute quartet
Abe Colon, Nadia Contreras, Vanessa Murillo, and Lizbeth Najera
Saxophone quartet
DL Brokenshire, Brittany Head, Samantha Matthews, and Haley McKown
Brass sextet
• Zach Hentschel, Jacob Little, Michael Ronning, Taylor Smith, Justin Sudderth, and David Wall
Percussion trio
• Christian Brumback, Kaleb Northrup, and Kyler Wilson

Thirty-one band students performed Class 1 pieces and earned Division I ratings, but since they weren’t performed from memory, those students weren’t eligible to advance to the state contest.

Students who earned Division I ratings and superior medals on Class 2 solos were Nadia Caudell (flute), Desteny Hernandez (flute), Haley Parton (bass clarinet), Anna Hage-Kaderka (alto sax), Hunter Mills (alto sax).
And: Edgar Aguilera (trumpet), Chance Castillo (trumpet), Olivia Kamp (French horn), Ethan Smith (trombone), Madison Halyard (euphonium), Bailey Mendenhall (euphonium), and Emma Pack (euphonium).
The UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest will be held in Austin May 26-28.
